2012-07-31 - No surprise at the London Olympics women’s singles second round: the 7th seed, Wimbledon semifinalist Angelique Kerber gave no chance to Tímea Babos, in 55 minutes she reached the last 16.

The 19-year old Hungarian player finished appearance at the Olympic Games.

LONDON OLYMPICS (WIMBLEDON, GRASS), WOMEN’S SINGLES, 2ND ROUND

Angelique Kerber (Germany, 7)-Tímea Babos (Hungary) 6:1, 6:1

The German player was 32th at the end of 2011, this year she jumped to the top10. Since the beginning of the year Kerber already defeated Julia Goerges, Sabine Lisicki, Sara Errani, Maria Sharapova, Marion Bartoli, Na Li, Jelena Jankovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams, Petra Kvitova, Flavia Pennetta and also Kim Clijsters!

Last year she was a semifinalist in the U.S. Open, this year was at the last 8 at Roland Garros and played for the final in Wimbledon. She is the seventh German female tennis player who has been in the top10.

Kerber at the Olympics in the first round 6:1, 3-0 lead against Petra Cetkovska, of the Czech Republic due to injury when forced to surrender. Timi beat Galina Voskoboeva 6:4, 6:2.

Unfortunately, there was no chance in the second round against the German player, who lost the first game, but after that played a very stable tennis. Tímea Babos tried what she could, had some winner shots, but had much more unforced errors. First she lost her serve easily, then the favourite broke her twice after two tight games. The first set lasted 26 minutes.

In the early part of the second set Kerber broke opponent’s serve again to 40, and after 2:0 Timi finally broke Kerber. The Hungarian player took advantage of her third break point, but then she lost again her serve to 40, although she defended two break points. Unfortunately Kerber remains extremely precise, at 4:1 she broke to 30 the Hungarian teen's serve, she had only 3 unforced errors and 16 winning shots.

Angelique Kerber reached match point after 56 minutes and immediately used it.

"I started the match well, I think I had good first game, but my opponent played so well that I felt there is no chance. She never gave me free points; I had to fight for everything. I tried for winning shots and after the long rallies I made errors. It could have been a better game ... Overall, It’s good thing that as the youngest participant I won a game in singles at the Olympics. I hope that I will be again here in four or eight years time "- said Tímea Babos.

The young Hungarian tennis player will practice at Wimbledon on Wednesday, and then travel to the Montreal tournament’s qualifier. Her father thinks that they must draw lessons from the match against Kerber.

"Not what I expected ... I had hoped to play a closer game with good serves, but the first serve is not really worked and first shots after the serve also didn’t work properly. Timi was helpless; she respected too much the opponent. Even when It should not have ... We have to fix that in the future this will not happen again when the opponent will be the favourite"- said Csaba Babos.
