Spanish success in Hobart final

The match lasted 1 hour 24 minutes.

On paper the Hungarian and Luxembourg player was the favourite, but the final proved, that the Spaniard’s ranking positions did not reflect the current knowledge and form.

Muguruza (no doubles, ranking) and Torro-Flor (860th) is almost played well and received relatively accurately, served precisely and was better at the net. The two Spanish double were not afraid of the opportunity and exploited the rival’s uncertainties. The Hungarian-Luxembourg duo lost serve at 2:3, but had three break points at 3:5. The rival with some luck, but always escaped, and won the 31-minute first act.

In the second set the Hungarian player lost serve at 2:3 with a double fault, but Timi and Mandy equalized at 4:4. In the next game Timi saved two break points but finally she lost her serve.

The Hungarian-Luxembourg duo then broke the opponent to 0, but couldn’t hold Mandy’s game…But Timi and partner had response and leveled to 6:6, came the tie-break!

In the deciding tie-break Mandy’s volley landed in the net to 5-3 and after that the Spaniards were unstoppable.

It was Timi’s third final in the WTA Tour: she won in singles in Monterrey last year, and celebrated the doubles triumph in Birmingham with Hsieh Su-Wei.

"I feel that we should’ve won the game, although the opponent played well. Unfortunately, today I started badly, it made me uncertain. In previous matches, I played better tennis. With the volleys I do not have a problem, but my baseline game was not good. Especially the returns…. But it was nice to play final. It’s good, that I could play as many matches and I exercised a lot. Maybe in Melbourne would not have been possible to train as much, " - said Timi after the final match.

Timi and her father are going on Saturday to Melbourne to the Australian Open. The Hungarian player will meet Kristina Mladenovic of France in singles and in doubles she plays with Laura Robson (Great Britain).

"Timi played badly this time, her partner couldn’t help. Unfortunately, they not played well today, nothing really worked. The warm-up was good, but it was not there day. The Spaniards were better now"- said Csaba Babos about the Hobart final.
